Hey everyone,

It’s been forever since I’ve written on here and, sitting in a lounge with a couple of friends in Banani, I decided I needed to be a little more diligent about it.

First off, 2008 has been a wonderful year for my magic. I’ve performed numerous shows at prestigious venues including Decagon and Goethe to name a few, met lots and lots of wonderful people and last but not least, ended the year with a grand show at Kozmo lounge, where famed musicians perform almost every month. I had an amazing time- but more about that later. This note is starting to sound like an episode on a sitcom where the writers are on vacation so they turn the whole episode into a bunch of recaps of funny stuff that happened before. Let’s first talk a little about my low paying job.

In a place like Bangladesh, the species of “quality” magicians is literally extinct. If you’re a magician, then there’s a very high chance I know you. I mean the last time someone really took this art seriously was a guy named Jewel Aich who’s more or less off the grid now, our parents loved him and so we grew up to love him as well.

So I know what your thinking, why get into this right? Well the way I saw things was, there was a musician almost every two houses with his so called “rock band”. I myself started off playing for a not so famous band in my early teens (the band sucked big time) and I realized how cliché the music industry was getting. So I figured, why not be a magician and target the same crowd? I mean, think about it, how many “guitarists” or “musicians” have you across and still remembered them or even there names? At least everyone remembers the guy that made a spoon bend with his mind or made a card magically appear under his show.

One of the greatest things about magic is the amount of people you come across. Let’s take the Kozmo Show for instance. I got to meet all the staff members, the owner (Arif bhai) himself, met another magician who performed with me, met an entire group of new people who assisted in producing the show and last but not least, the audience themselves. The Kozmo staffs are one of the nicest I’ve ever met and they helped me with anything and everything, which included setting up equipment days prior to the show. Here’s a clip from the Kozmo Presents “A night of illusions” show:

Magic at Decagon

I know this post is getting long, but there are a few more things to write about. The main reason for writing this note is to thank a couple of people that have encouraged me to carry on with this art, without these people I probably would have never given it a shot.

First and foremost I’d like to thank Sharf Ahmed Saadh, my trusty and loyal manager. This guy has been with me for a long time now, and I seriously have my doubts whether he sleeps or not without thinking about me (in a non-pervy way, lolz). He’s a one man show, promoting me, getting me gigs and of course taking pictures with his talented photographic skills. Not to mention his superb exaggerating skills as well, heheh.
Then of course, there’s the entire AIESEC team behind me, like the 300, except they’re probably more in number. AIESECers are born motivational speakers, so I guess that helped as well. Some of my closest friends (also AIESECers) have also been constantly inspiring and boosting. Special thanks to Nehal (my brother and fellow retired magician/baatpar),Elisun (for promoting me unintentionally) Anika (emotional inspiration giver), Shamma (Has the nicest things to say and always reports me with who thought what), Onu (even you man, lolz, despite all the criticism, I learned to tackle a lot of stuff I was doing wrong, thanks a lot for that), Zaved (for constantly hating magic and insulting me throughout the year and also for being my soulmate), Ishtiaque (for giving me that pat on the shoulder after a tired and exhausting show and encouraging me to look forward to the next show). Another special thanks to all my friends from AIUB who chit chat with me at Roll Express, they were superb inspirations. (Jackie, Nadya, Mishu, Shuvo and Sabbir)

I met Pamel, a fellow magician last year at a coffee place, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. This guy makes me “not” want to quit magic on a bad hair day. He inspired me in a million different ways I can’t describe. All I can truly say is I’m glad I met him. A very talented magician who I’ve learned a lot from even though I never admit it.

Thanks to Nafis(CEO of Live Square) for having so much faith in me for reasons I still cant figure out. Thanks to Salman and Naiyan for the full support during the shows and incorporating me with “Sleight Of Hand” productions. Its good to have someone entertain me for once. Thanks to Naghme and Afia for believing in me and being one of my first ever audience members and actually applauding after I pulled off a stupid trick any 8 year old could’ve figured out. Thanks to the entire Bashori group, they were the first people I would show magic to make sure the angles were correct and whether they were buying it or not. I would advise all magicians to go there at least once and experience a street simulation inside a restaurant. Thanks to a couple of conmen, whose names I can’t mention, for teaching me the tricks of the trade. Thanks to Fahim (for encouraging me and making lame magic jokes and taking me infront of his family to make a fool out of myself..heheh) and GrooveTrap for always adoring my magic (especially Simin Apu)….and ofcourse Nazia (who has probably managed to hit me with every single magician insult jokes there is). Last but not least, thanks to all my classmates from DT, who always appreciated this art from a very young age and have always been there with me by my side. I love you guys to death. (Sorry way too many names to mention). And of course to all the people that support me and wish me luck.

Really special thanks to a girl named Sarah M. She has no idea how much she contributed in helping me find myself as a person and still continues to do so. Probably one of the few people in the world that understands my twisted/sadistic/magical mind and keeps me on track. I really suck at saying this without being corny upfront so here it is, thanks for everything and being there, means a lot.

There you have it, sorry, the post wasn’t meant to be that long, but I just kept on blabbering. I forgot what I even started writing about and I’m too lazy to scroll up. Apologies to anyone whose name I’ve forgotten, deep inside I’m very thankful. I will try to blog more on my site for each show to keep an update on things. Until then, it bye bye.

Peace, Love and Flip Flops
